Today is a great day for talking about balance. My one week vacation starts today and so far I laid in bed staring at TV and eating potato chips until lunchtime, then I got up to get something to eat and I am now writing this post. I know that is not the ideal thing to say, especially during these health conscious times…but…hey, I am being transparent lol. The truth is I don’t get time for myself. I am a single mom and in my current situation, the only way to get “me” time is to use vacation time and that is an unfortunate truth. I don’t believe it will be like this always though. I know sometimes we are in a situation and if just feels like we don’t know when it will change. We know how we think our life should be, but for some reason, God is keeping us right where we are…the question is why? So “balance” is what came to mind today, and this is the direction I am led to go in.
As I sit here on my day off and think about what I want to accomplish today, my body keeps telling me…not a darn thing! I don’t even want to go outside and get into my car –although I have to pick a friend up later, so I will need to at some point-. I know that I need rest; Not only physical rest, but mental rest. I was almost reluctant to answer the phone today in fear that someone will call me and that would force me to have to alter my plans for the day. There are many ways that life can be thrown off balance, and usually the cause is ….life; A new baby, a new job, death in the family, accident, holiday, moving…etc. you name it. We wonder when we can either get out of our stagnant situation, or cause our chaotic situation to seize. Then we find that God isn’t changing our situation ….yet. It’s not that God did not hear our prayer; As I mentioned in a previous post, he is with us always, so of course He hears our prayers, but He also knows what is best for us. Sometimes God needs us to learn how to find balance, in a seemingly unbalanced situation so when He moves us to the next level we can maintain. God always provides a way for escape, “13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.” (1 Corinthians 10:13). As I stated with my situation, I need to take vacation time to get a break, and for now, that is one of my means of escape. I don’t know why I did not think of it sooner, I would have saved myself a lot of aggravation. Sometimes, the Lord knows, I just need a few hours to rest and think clearly.
We have to examine ourselves and our lives and look at the resources we have. How do we accomplish what we need to accomplish exactly where we are in life…even accomplish balance. Paul says in Philippians 4:11 “11 Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content:” Great inventions have come out of a need. Balance is a crucial need mentally, physically and spiritually. When the body is off balance in certain areas – ie cells, hormones, emotions-, that brings about mental and physical dysfunction /disease. If you heard the old saying, “you can be so spiritually bound that you are no earthly good” (and vice versa), that is also imbalance. We live on earth in our physical bodies, and we have a responsibility to take care of ourselves, others, and our financial affairs, etc. as well as, praising and glorifying God. The more truly intimate time we spend with God, – not just punching in a time clock, or doing things for show – we can trust God to reveal to us how to better handle our affairs on earth and/ or in the spirit. God can lead us to a book that teaches us how to be a better manager for example or a scripture that talks about the importance of putting God first.
I am a work in progress in this area. When I am too frustrated with my son, or at work, or with friends…or if I eat too much or too little (ha) etc….something is usually off balance. Fear (which is mostly what our issues are rooted in) also throws me off balance, and historically as well as now, fear is always used to control people. 2 Timothy 1:7 says, “7 For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.” I am taking this time to work on obtaining and maintaining a balanced life and so should you. Think about everywhere in your life that is off balance and begin to pray to God for balance in those areas. This way the enemy won’t continue to run amuck in your life. In every area of the world, we can use balance. It has to first start off with trusting God and having balance in our personal life. God knows exactly where we are, and when we hand our struggles to Him, he will move us in the right direction. Balance can be achieved right where you are…when you seek God.
But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.
